Heroes make themselves known. They share characteristics such as, courage and selflessness that have always been valued. Overtime society has changed the way these values are portrayed. In Beowulf, the main character in the anonymously written poem Beowulf, he shows the importance of being courageous and selfless. Beowulf is courageous enough to fight Grendel, the monster that terrorized the Danes. Beowulf is also selfless because he is willing to sacrifice his life in order to stop Grendel from attacking anymore innocent people. Values like courage and selflessness are defined differently today. Courage is stepping out of one s comfort zone and taking action on achieving personal goals. Being courageous today is going against society s norm or trends. Being selfless means putting others before yourself. It means devoting help even if there is no reward, unlike Beowulf who acted selfless but expected to be praised. Today many people value selflessness and has become more of a moral c haracteristic. There are differences in the way heroic values are portrayed in Beowulf and the way society interprets values today. Movie Review: Thirteen Days April 20, 2013 Summary The movie Thirteen Days is based off of the real life situation of the Cuban Missile Crisis that occurred back in 1962. The United States learned that the Soviet Union was placing missiles with nuclear weapons in Cuba. The movie follows President John F. Kennedy and his advisors as they are trying to come up with a plan of action for how to handle the situation. The missiles are positioned to be close enough to hit almost any city in the United States and capable of killing nearly every citizen. The Joint Chiefs of Staff advise immediate U.S. military strikes against the missile sites followed by an invasion of Cuba. An example would be when the Russian leader said that the missiles were merely for defensive reasons, not an offensive tactic, he trusted his intuition that he was lying. The President has the ability to inspire. Not only did he have to make an executive decision on a course of action, he also had to convince others that this was the best thing to do. He showed commitment. He was concerned about making public appearances instead of working on the problem. He was dedicated to finding a solution so that millions of Americans would stay safe. Liberal Media Bias in the United States Essay People rely on journalist to report factual news and to make political points in helping the American citizen in making their decision when it comes time to vote. Since American’s do not have time to research every side to all the stories that have been published, they count on the media to portray both sides. However, you cannot believe everything that the media reports. If you were to pay attention to the reports given by journalists, you will find that they report on the stories that they feel they want to get out. And when it comes to politics, they have a way of leaning more towards a democratic view. The American media has a way of portraying the news in a bias way, which has been studied, researched, and reported to be true. Journalists use their influence to persuade the opinions of their viewers or readers, and to get the people to believe what they are reporting on is factual and true information. They will use the public’s opinion to help form the people’s opinion by using newspapers, advertisements, etc. The media will also use misleading headlines for newspapers or magazines, knowing that some people will not read the whole article. This makes those who do not want to read the full article to believe the partial statement made by the journalist. They also have a way of reporting only on the events that they feel the public would care to hear about. What makes Macbeth such a complicated character is the way his outlook keeps on changing throughout the play. This essay will prove that Macbeth is an evil man and was not overpowered by ambition to get what he wanted. This essay will also determine that certain characters like the witches did not force him to do evil; they simply triggered it. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth is shown as a hero in the Scottish army, that is ironic because Macbeth has defeated a traitor and he will become one. We feel that a person of his loyalty could never commit evil unless he had a good reason or if he would be provoked. After Macbeths first meeting with the witches, we learn from his aside that he has thought about killing Duncan My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical 1(Macbeth 1.3.152). If it were not for them Macbeth would have had to continue on guessing and might have killed many people who pose no threat to him. Until now, everybody that died was a threat to Macbeth in some way or another. To a certain degree, Macbeth is considered only an evil man to who he thinks stand in his way of greatness and happiness. All that changes when he has Macduffs castle attacked by a band of murderers. The murderers killed many people who have nothing to do with Macbeths continuing reign over Scotland. Macbeths evil is now at its peak. Nobody can blame Lady Macbeth for his actions now. She doesnt even know what he is doing at this point. The witches prophecies told him that Macduff poses a challenge for him. Still they never mentioned his family or even anybody else. That didnt stop Macbeth from killing anybody and everybody at the castle. Macbeth is in fact an evil man. Maybe at one point he could have been admired as a soldier, a brave man who would fight willingly for his country. He had the titles of Thane of Glamis and Thane of Cawdor but that wasnt enough for him. At the beginning of the play he would contemplate evil actions and then he would feel the guilt for these actions. The play concluded with him killing at the chance that someone was against him without giving it a second thought. To the very end, Macbeth proved to be a traitor and felt no longer any remorse for his actions. The play concluded with a satisfactory ending and Macbeth wasnt known for his great achievements and his aid to Scotland but as this dead butcher 9(Macbeth 5.8.82.) World War 1 is an example of one of the major wars in the history of our world that truly has placed a mark on humanity. It demonstrates how war was truly interpreted by the people involved at that certain time and place. On June 28, 1914, a Serbian nationalist named Gavrilo Princip assassinated Franz Ferdinand the Archduke of Austria, in Sarajevo. One month following the incident, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. The war divided Europe into two armed camps. One side was the Triple Alliance which was made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy, and their enemy was the Triple Entente which was made of France, Russia and Great Britain. As other countries began to join sides, the Triple Alliance became known as the Central Powers and the Triple Entente became the Allied Forces. Most of the action took place in trenches which were dug deep into the ground in zig-zag patterns. Soldiers would spend an average of up to 8 days in these trenches, protecting themselves from gunfire, snipers, diseases, and more. The war was different from previous wars due to the use of efficient machine guns, tanks, and air force. The war ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month when the parties signed the Armistice and agreed to stop fighting. Why were the different sides fighting? The major event of the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand triggered the retaliation of Austria-Hungary and its allied countries. A war that resulted in millions of deaths was triggered by death itself.
